Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Disappointed
I had high hopes for this product to be able to transfer my collection of LP vinyls to CDs. I tried to use it years ago on my PC but gave it up for obvious (Windows) reasons. Finally on a Mac (Powerbook G4) I thought it would be a breeze. It has been anything but; starting with very poor documentation, and none whatsoever regarding "SpinDoctor" the part of Toast that deals with the transfer of analog to digital media. I have experienced not only constant crashes of the programs but unexpected and not so sporadic recording of distortion. The program itself has gotten "corrupted" becoming unusable and the solution, at least mine, has been to uninstall and then reinstall the software; that seems to solve the problem, at least temporary.
After having spend quite a bit of money on Roxio products, Windows version and now the Mac one, I expected more. I should have paid more attention to the reviews on all the forums about it that were more negative than positive.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - YOU CANNOT RETURN DEFECTIVE ROXIO PRODUCTS
I purchased MyDVD 9 from Roxio and it failed to work properly. When I consulted their technical support the suggestions they made were based on Windows Vista (it took them over a week to get back to me). The only problem is that my OS is Windows XP which I spelled out very clearly in my initial e-mail request. When I tried to get my money back they said they would not return products that were not purchased directly from Roxio. Consequently, IF YOU BUY ROXIO PRODUCTS YOU CANNOT RETURN THEM!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - At last, streaming and burning
Hooking up the Mac or PC to a tv is not so easy. I involves some interim connectors and even some paid services. I don't want to pay extra for streaming so this is the solution. I go from tivo to Mac/pc, then device or disc. The Windows version though doesn't have streaming. Good choice when I don't have time to convetrt or enough room on my touch ipod. Toast gives me another way to watch video. With the NFL kicking off already I know I'll be using it more. Saves me from being a couch potatoe. I can watch from while waiting on the train, the kid's appointments and so on.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Essential for Mac media
All the options for making disks put this ahead of the pack. I used to settle for plain disk burning software not being aware of other options. Now I can compress files and use a minimum of disks. I can keep the quality high too. Besides saving files I've made the video self running on the dvd since some school pcs didn't want to fill their hard drive. It also makes pc/Mac compatible disks. A bonus is the sound mixer. I didn't notice it when I looked up the specs but I'm glad it's there. It's easy to make a few custom pieces even for a tone deaf person. Keep it up Roxio!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - comprehensive feature set in a solid package
This is a nice update to version 5 that I had been using. I found it very useful at allowing me to access and convert my TiVo content. It does not compress as well as some other software but has good video quality and is no slower then other products. If you only got Toast it would be a good deal, but it comes with 6 apps making this a very good bargin. I had trouble getting streamer to work with my firewall and router, but it is still nice to know there is real value with your purchace. Other apps that are a real nice bonus are the disc cover and discCatalongMaker (addressing a real gap for me when I back up documents and want to print an easy index of the contents).

Speaking of Mini DisplayPort, here's another entry from Apple in the shipping hall of shame. They're shipping the five-inch Mini-DiplayPort-to-DVI adapter in a box that's bigger than the MacBook's. Check out the waste.

As Kevin notes, it might seem nitpicky, but when you compare this to how much Apple boasts on the MacBook's green packaging, it is kind of jarring:

"The new MacBook packaging is up to 41 percent smaller than the previous generation. And smaller boxes are much better for the planet. Because smaller boxes mean we can fit more boxes on each shipping pallet — up to 25 percent more. Which means more products will fit on each boat and plane. Which means fewer boats and planes are used, resulting in fewer CO2 emissions. It’s just one seemingly minor change. But it has a major positive impact on our environment."

Surely they've got a smaller box lying around somewhere. If not, we hope they transition all of their shipping boxes to a greener variation—not just to align them with Apple's own standards and goals, but to set an example for the rest of the industry. [jkOnTheRun]
