  • Open-Ended Universe - Play missions randomly or follow the storyline. The universe is open for exploration, and the game evolves based on the decisions you make. Demolish pirate bases or supply depots and watch the political fallout. Lane Hackers go after cargo vessels if you disable trade lanes. Support your local cop...or not. The choice is yours but the universe won't wait for you.
  • Dynamic Reputation - Your choice in missions, your successes, your failures...they all change your reputation constantly. Play as a Naval Officer and everyone associated with the Navy will treat you better. Become a pirate and hunt down cargo vessels and youll soon have friends in low places. The missions youre offered and the technology you have access to all depend on who you become.
  • Distinctive Styles of Play - Chase the almighty dollar, disrupt the corrupt government, enforce the law, chase human prey...every game is different. Want access to easy money? Become a Lane Hacker: take dowenemies blind. Politics and intrigue are everywhere in the universe. If you have what it takes to be a CEO here on Earth....

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wish they came out with part 2
I like this game. There are sites devoted to modding and what ever you could think of which has helped make it live a very long life.

This game is very stable and intuitive. It's the best space simms so far that have played.

The only big disappointment is that there is no Freelancer two.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Awesome but a needs more content
Freelancer is an awesome game. The gameplay is incredibly addictive and the control system is really nicely user friendly. I had a great time playing through the single player campeign. My only gripe about the game is the shortness of the SP campeign I got through it in 3 days. Once done with the single player campeign there is loads to do but after a while. I had max level and plenty of money and the best ship and the best guns and there was really nothing left to do. Apparently there are some huge mods that add loads of content to the game, maybe they would spruce it up a bit.
Really though, this game is awesome and I would suggest it to anyone. I don't usually play space sims but the role playing elements and the awesome control system in Freelancer made it a whole new experience.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It's been several years and I'm still looking for a better game!
There are quite a few space sims and flying sims in general, but Freelancer is unique. Here's what makes this game unique:

Online co-op multiplayer.
Dedicated server that YOU can own and control.
Real time missions and flying.
Many mods.

There are a number of multiplayer space sims and flying sims that are good (and also very old). Some decent ones included the Star Wars X-wing/Tie fighter series and Freespace series, as well as a number of WW2 based games. However, all are mission based, so you have to select a mission, ready the mission, then launch, wait for it to end, rinse and repeat. Freelancer isn't like that. Your buddies (or enemy players, for that matter), can be in the middle of selecting a mission, can be retrofitting their ship, trading goods, blasting baddies, or being a wingman for you, all at the same time, so this game best approaches a MMORPG (without the RP, I suppose). Oh, if only they'll release the next version of this game!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Immersing solo player experience
Have never played Freelancer multi-player. Have never added any of the mods. My only experience with Freelancer is as a solo player and this is one of the most immersing games I have played. I like playing in a dark room with nobody around and this game really takes you away. If you are looking for a great solo experience then you can't go wrong here. Exceptional value!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - MODs make this game replayable over and over
Ok, I am old. I grew up with Ataris which cost then as much as Xboxes do now. Commodor-64 had "Elite" which is like Freelancer, but no plot at all. When the Intel 486s came out, I played the thematic godparents of Freelancer (Strike Commander, Wing Commander, WC Privateer) and LOVED these old games. Yeah, ok, I need Geritol, but these games are better than the garbage that is TV today.

The control system took a little getting used to, but is pretty easy and enjoyable once you see why the mouse control is important vs joysticks. The universe in the storyline is not "quite" open ended. You still have to do "x" to progress. However, even knowing the story still leaves you a LOT of time to explore the universe and get your rear end shot off if you are not careful. A truly enjoyable game.

I have played Freelancer several times through using different MODs. I truly enjoy the MOD Manager for this game as it allows you to employ multiple MODs.

Some MODs are quaint and just improve a few weapons or your max speed (thank God for that at least). Others change the entire dynamic of the game and universe. One even has the old Privateer ships in it. Another let's you use a really nice gun-only freighter which outguns the Corsairs and even some capitol ships (but you pay a lot for it) or let's you pilot a Cylon Raider from the original Battalstar Galactica series with a very cool energy torpedo system.

All in all, the games with the player modifiable systems are wonderful and the ones I find myself playing over and over again. Freelancer, Doom 3, UFO Aftershock, and others fall into this great catagory.
